“Daredevil: Born Again” Scrapped by Marvel…Hopefully A New Napkin

I’m still in the process of getting the site back up from the deletion as well as moving to a new host, however, this news came out and I had to post for obvious reasons. According to many media sources, DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN in its current form has been scrapped by Marvel/Disney. There were several episodes completed, but they will not be aired. Kevin Feige has decided the current model for Marvel shows is not working, therefore, he’s decided to go with a different way of producing these shows. I’m not sure what this means for DAREDEVIL in general. I can only hope it means anything planned will be closer to where we were at the end of season three of the Netflix show. A la A New Napkin. According to one source I’ve read the plan was with the Disney+ version, it would start with Matt Murdock saying goodbye to Foggy Nelson played in the original show by Elden Henson. There were also no plans on bringing back Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page. My feeling is other than Charlie, Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk/Kingpin), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), and Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle/The Punisher) none of the original cast members were going to be back. They’d already recast Vanessa Fisk played by Ayelot Zuerer on Netflix, with actress Sandrine Holt. There was no word as to whether Elodie Yung would be back as Elektra, and certainly no word whether Mike Colter and Finn Jones would be back as Luke Cage and Danny Rand, though my feeling is they wouldn’t have been.

A word about the site. I’m still trying to get the content added to the gallery that was deleted. I said in a social media post I’ve had trouble finding some of the content I had when the site was deleted. When that is complete I’ll reopen the gallery. Until that time, the main site will reopen minus the posts up to this date. Those will be readded when I finally get the content back up in the gallery, though posts thus far go up to March 26, 2022. Please be patient while I continue to get the gallery back to what it was.

DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Scrapped By Marvel Studios; Will Be Overhauled With A New Creative Team

Daredevil: Born Again is perhaps Marvel Studios’ most highly anticipated Disney+ TV series but, as a result of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, production on the 18-episode series was halted back in June.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, fewer than half of the show had been shot but, having reviewed the footage, it was enough for Kevin Feige to decide it wasn’t working. As a result, Marvel Studios fired Head Writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman last month along with directors attached to the remaining episodes.

The plan now is to essentially reboot Daredevil: Born Again from a creative level, with the hunt on for new writers and directors.

Ord and Corman came up with a legal procedural that was vastly different from Netflix’s Daredevil; in fact, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock wasn’t going to don his superhero costume until the fourth episode! Even in an 18-episode season, that’s a strange decision.

Now, Daredevil: Born Again – in its original form, at least – has been scrapped but the show will live on.

“Marvel, after greenlighting the concept, found itself needing to rethink the original intention of the show,” the trade explains. “Marvel plans to keep some scenes and episodes, though other serialized elements will be injected, with Corman and Ord becoming executive producers on the two-season series.”

This overhaul is part of Marvel Studios’ new approach to small screen storytelling. The plan now is to begin hiring proper showrunners who will be joined by full-time TV executives in place of movie ones. As Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum explains, “We need executives that are dedicated to this medium, that are going to focus on streaming, focus on television, because they are two different forms.”

This revamped development process will see showrunners write pilots and show bibles, while the days of an entire series being shot – and then figuring out what did and didn’t work in post-production with costly reshoots – are now over.

We’ll also start seeing multi-season serialised TV shows rather than limited series which are used primarily to set the stage for other stories in the wider MCU. As we’ve seen, that approach has led to mixed results, especially when conflicting production schedules lead to a lack of connectivity.

It’s likely Daredevil: Born Again will now slip even further down the release calendar, and it’s hard to say how much of what we’ve heard about the show – such as The Punisher’s return and The Kingpin’s attempt to become New York City Mayor – will actually remain.

Stay tuned for updates.

Marvel “Defenders” Shows to Leave Netflix

According to many sources, all the Marvel shows with THE DEFENDERS characters of Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones), and Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) are all set to leave Netflix this month. Not exactly sure what this means, but here’s hoping it means we just might be getting extensions of all these shows with all these characters and hopefully the actors. More below.

Netflix Warning Says It’s Removing ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Punisher,’ And All Its Marvel Defenders Shows

Well this is pretty big. Netflix has now started to show a brief message to some viewers who are booting up the Defenders suite of Marvel shows for the first time, saying that they will be removed from the service on March 1. I just tested it out myself, playing Iron Fist episode one, and the March 1 message does indeed appear in the corner, albeit for quite literally, under a second.

The shows on this list would include Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and the Defenders crossover series. They are a relic of another age before Disney was doing its own Marvel shows on Disney Plus, and they were a partner, not a rival to Netflix.

But now, fans already have realized that the deal between Netflix and Marvel has expired for these characters, hence Matt Murdock appearing in the new Spider-Man and Kingpin showing up in Hawkeye on Disney Plus. And it stands to reason if these shows are coming down off Netflix in March, they are likely headed to either Disney Plus itself, or possibly the Disney-owned Hulu, which could be seen as a better fit for the more violent series like Daredevil and Punisher, which have “adult content” beyond what Disney’s MCU shows have done so far.

I suppose I realized that this was probably going to happen eventually, but those shows are so intimately linked with Netflix, it’s weird to see them leave. That was during a strange era where Marvel TV and Marvel movies were very disconnected, as though all those series were technically in the MCU, there were never really any true crossovers with the movies.

dy seen this happened with two different Daredevil characters, including its star, and more are supposed to return for the upcoming Echo series. There’s even talk of restarting Daredevil altogether. And if that’s happening, you might be able to imagine other characters like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage could reappear somewhere as well in the universe.

Jon Bernthal, The Punisher, said he was only interested in returning to the role if the show would remain as “true” to the character as it has been, ie. being extremely violent, which again, feels like a Hulu thing, rather than being able to exist on Disney Plus. Jessica Henwick recently said in an interview that she turned down a role in Shang-Chi because she was holding out hope that her Colleen Wing Iron Fist character could return to the MCU someday, and that wouldn’t happen if she was cast as a different part (I’d certainly watch a new season of Iron Fist starring her, though not Danny Rand).

So, we’ll see if Netflix or Disney has something to say officially about this. But the notice is real, I’ve seen it myself, and this removal appears to be imminent. I’d prioritize getting through Daredevil seasons 1-3, Jessica Jones season 1 and Punisher season 1 before they leave, if you haven’t seen them yet.

Update: Netflix also has Agents of SHIELD, but I did not see the March 1 message there, while I have now confirmed it shows up on the other six Netflix-MCU shows. SHIELD was originally on ABC, and may be part of a separate agreement

Radio Interview With Charlie Via Youtube’s Emergency Awesome

A Youtube channel called Emergency Awesome just posted an excerpted audio interview with Charlie about DAREDEVIL and including THE DEFENDERS and news that filming is about to begin on DAREDEVIL Season Three, how they filmed THE DEFENDERS using all the best people from all the Netflix shows including LUKE CAGE, IRON FIST & JESSICA JONES. Charlie also talked about the production on THE PUNISHER series with Jon Bernthal as well as the fact he hasn’t received that phone call concerning the possibility of appearing in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. He also discussed how season two for DAREDEVIL was more about the mysticism as it would ultimately lead into IRON FIST with Finn Jones, as oppose to what happened in season one of DAREDEVIL which Charlie called more of a police show with a superhero element. All in all it’s a great interview. Emergency Awesome cut the longer interview down to cover the main points, so I’m trying to find the longer version. When I do I’ll post here. If anyone else finds it please leave a link in the comments section of this post.

New Charlie Cox Siting in New York City

Here are some images of Charlie filming THE DEFENDERS in New York City. Also featured is Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) and it looks like the two of them are having a lot of fun. Honestly, can the summer come any quicker? I can’t wait to see Finn Jones in Iron Fist, then Charlie, Krysten, Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Finn (Danny Rand) next summer. Also included in THE DEFENDERS will be Elden Hensen (Foggy Nelson), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle / The Punisher), Elodie Yung (Elektra), Scott Glenn (Stick) and superstar Sigourney Weave in an as yet to be announced character. Please keep an eye here for further updates on the various Netflix Marvel shows.
